Witnessing to Christ and Love for Neighbor in an Election Year

The North/West Lower Michigan Synod announces the next session of our Adult Theological Education program: Witnessing to Christ and Love for Neighbor in an Election Year. Join the Rev. Amy E. Reumann, ELCA Witness in Society Senior Director, for a six-week study starting September 3, 2024!

The Rev. Amy E. Reumann serves as ELCA Senior Director for Witness in Society in Washington, D.C. Her leadership directs staff and church advocacy in federal public policy, through the ELCA-affiliated state public policy office (sppo) network, at the United Nations through Lutheran Office for World Community representation, and with the ELCA Corporate Social Responsibility program. She has served as a parish pastor, Assistant to the Bishop in Milwaukee, Wis., director of Lutheran Advocacy Ministry in Pennsylvania and is a former intern at the Lutheran Office for World Community. Reumann is a graduate of Muhlenberg College, the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and the General Theological Seminary, New York City. She was awarded a GreenFaith Fellowship in religious-environmental leadership and a Louisville Institute Pastoral Studies Grant on “Public Testimony as a Faith Practice.” Reumann is a Master Gardener, manager at an urban farm and loves to garden, quilt, hike and read mysteries.

“Witnessing to Christ and Love for Neighbor in an Election Year” is an opportunity to hear from the Rev. Amy E. Reumann on civic engagement intersections and opportunities in our faith journey. Core affirmation of our baptism is to “serve all people, following the example of our Lord Jesus” and “to strive for justice and peace in all the earth.” Informed by our discipleship, “We have a responsibility not only to fulfill our private roles and functions in life, and to pray for those in authority (1 Timothy 2:1-2), but also to be civically engaged,” relays the ELCA social message on government and civic engagement.

The class will meet on six consecutive Tuesday evenings: September 3, 10, 17, 24; October 1, 8, 2024 from 7:00 – 8:15pm ET via Zoom. This course is open to all adults, both laypeople and rostered ministers, and is free of charge. Sessions will be recorded. Registration is required and will close on August 24, 2024. For more information and to register, visit the Mitten Synod website.

Ash Wednesday Worship

Service of Imposition of Ashes

7 pm Worship will also be on Facebook Live

Why do we wear ashes on Ash Wednesday?
Since ancient times, the wearing of ashes has been a symbol of repentance and humility.  Job, the people of Nineveh, and the prophets all used ashes as a symbol of their brokenness and need for God’s mercy.  Ashes are also a symbol of healing.  Ashes were used as part of the cleansing ritual to welcome someone back into the community (Numbers 19:17).  On Ash Wednesday, we make the sign of the cross on our foreheads as a reminder that we too sin and we too are healed.  Ash Wednesday worship offers a time of extended confession; a time for reflecting on, for letting go of, all that keeps us separate from God.  We then receive the ashes on our foreheads in the shape of a cross, a visual reminder that nothing can separate us from God’s love.

Return to Facebook Live Worship

After a very cold and blustery Sunday, Trinity council met on Wednesday and made the decision to return to all Facebook Live worship starting this Sunday (November 22). Since the bulk of our congregation is already worshiping via Facebook Live, council felt it made sense to prioritize that worship experience and really make it a worshipful one, rather that the windswept, phone blowing over, experience you had last Sunday. We will continue virtual until we reach Level C in our return to worship benchmarks or the weather becomes warm enough to return outside.

Worship will livestream on Sunday mornings at 10:30 am from the Facebook page. Unlike the spring where worship was in my living room, we will be broadcasting from inside the sanctuary with a small group of worship leaders. The hope is we can create a good, worshipful experience for everyone. As we move into this new phase, I continue to ask for your support, your prayers, and your feedback on what would help the worship experience feel more worshipful.
